Christmas gifts that get used all year: handmade olive oil bottles, cups and bowls with motifs from Hvar, who would love which piece, and how to make sure your gift arrives in time.
Christmas gifts that take you back to the Adriatic: handmade ceramics inspired by Hvar
I don't want to turn Christmas into a pile of material gifts and leave the spirit and peace of the season aside. Still, I want to surprise the people I love with something special. Something with a soul, something that leaves a trace.
The oil bottle I make is a gift that takes you back to the best moments on the Croatian coast. On the table it brings a little Adriatic charm, wherever it may be.
A gift you won't just put aside
The best Christmas gifts are the ones that get used. Whenever your mum, your sister or a friend cooks lunch and reaches for the oil bottle you gave them, they think of you. It's a gift used all year round, not just on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Handmade ceramics also carry something you can't buy in a shopping centre: the traces of a hand. On my bottles you can see and feel every carved olive leaf, every wave. No two pieces are the same, so your gift can't be the same as the one somebody else received.
And for those who live far from the sea, in Vienna, Munich or London, the bottle is a small piece of summer. The scent of olive oil, a blue glaze like the sea off Hvar and the pine from the island. The Adriatic on the kitchen table, in the middle of December.
How a Christmas gift with a soul is made
I throw every bottle on the potter's wheel in my studio in Split. Then I decorate it in the sgraffito technique: I apply several layers of coloured clay and scratch through them to reveal the motif. That's why you can not only see the pattern but feel it under your fingers.
I find inspiration for the motifs on Hvar, my native island: olive, pine, capers, rosemary, lavender and the sea. Carving decoration into clay is known from the Neolithic pottery of the Hvar culture too, so every bottle continues something much older than me.
Each piece passes through my hands dozens of times and is finally fired at 1230 °C. At that temperature stoneware no longer absorbs water, and the glaze becomes a thin layer of glass that doesn't crack or fade. The bottle is made for the everyday kitchen, not to gather dust on a shelf.
One more detail that mattered to me: the neck of the bottle is shaped so the oil pours in a controlled way and doesn't run down the side. I wrote about how I got there in the article on the bottle's design.
Which Christmas gift for whom
For the one who cooks. An olive oil bottle is the first choice, from €70. If you want something bigger, add a bowl or plate in the same motif: the Olive oil bottle with the Olive serving bowl (for olives), or the Rosemary oil bottle with the Rosemary plate. You get a set that looks as if it was designed together from the start, because it was.
For the coffee lover. An espresso cup from €21, or a latte cup for slow Sunday mornings. Two cups in different motifs make a lovely gift for a couple.
For someone who loves having guests. The Sea bowl or Sea plate for starters, olives and cheese. On the table, the turquoise glaze looks like the shallows off Hvar.
For a new home. An oil bottle, two cups and a bowl in the same motif: a whole little Adriatic kitchen in one box.
When you don't know what to get. A gift card from €25 to €200 arrives by e-mail, so they choose their own piece and you can't go wrong.
More ideas by budget (under €30, €30–50, from €50) are on the Handmade gifts page.
Will it arrive before Christmas?
Yes, if you order in time. I pack and ship orders within 1–4 business days (up to 7 for larger orders). Delivery takes 1–3 business days in Croatia, 3–10 business days in the EU and 5–12 business days in the USA.
The bottles usually sell out quickly. Every few weeks I add new pieces to the web shop, and then you can order the one you want directly. Newsletter subscribers are the first to hear the exact restock date and get access a few hours early, so you reach your bottle before everyone else.
More about how a new batch is made and when it arrives: Restock.
I wrap every piece in paper and protect it carefully, so you can give the parcel just as it is. Running late? The gift card arrives by e-mail the same day.
Shipping prices by country are on the Shipping rates page.
To finish
Christmas is a time for family, for food that is shared and for conversations that last longer than usual. If a gift can be part of that table, and not just another box under the tree, it has done its job.
