How to Care for Handmade Ceramics: Washing, Heat, and Everyday Use

If you’re wondering how to take care of handmade ceramics, here are some tips that will help you enjoy them for years to come.
These are the most common questions I get:
Can I wash handmade ceramics in the dishwasher?
Yes, you can! I can’t guarantee for other pottery, but I can for mine. Every ceramic piece I make is fired at a high temperature, which means it no longer absorbs liquids that could damage the glaze. From time to time, you can wash it by hand – because we all enjoy a little extra care sometimes.
Gentle care tips for dishwasher use:
💙 Place pieces so they don’t bump into each other during the cycle.
💙 If your cup or bowl has a handle, make sure it sits securely.
💙 Dishwasher detergents can be abrasive – washing at lower temperatures helps reduce chemical exposure and potential thermal shock.
💙 And finally – kindness lasts. Every once in a while, wash by hand for a little extra love.
All of my ceramics are fired at high temperatures, making both the clay and glaze stronger and more durable.
Can I use my handmade ceramic cup for hot tea?
Yes! You can pour hot tea or coffee into your cup without worry. The only thing to keep in mind is to avoid sudden temperature shocks. For example, don’t pour boiling water into a cup that’s just been rinsed with ice-cold water. Instead, let it reach room temperature or rinse with warm water first.
Can I use handmade ceramics in the microwave?
No – handmade ceramics are not suitable for microwave use. The microwave creates very high heat in a short time, which can cause thermal shock and damage the piece.
✨ Each ceramic piece I create is handmade in Croatia, in my studio in Split. It’s unique, inspired by my home island of Hvar and our beautiful Adriatic coast. With the right care, your handmade ceramics will last for many years and remain part of your daily rituals.
